of Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the capital of Macedonia. Greece's second largest city is fast becoming the powerhouse of the Balkans.
Founded in 316 BC, Thessaloniki was named after the half-sister of Alexander the Great. At the crossroads between east and west, this multicultural metropolis has a dramatic history of conquests and counter-invasions.
Thessaloniki is a prosperous waterfront city, its sophisticated business centre balanced by a lively student culture. The Aristotle University, founded in 1925, is Greece's largest university, with 60,000 students. The city's docklands have been transformed into post- industrial bars, restaurants and galleries.

Major Sites and Museums
The 15th-century White Tower on the waterfront is the city's most prominent landmark. The 3rd-century Rotonda, the oldest church in the city, is another monument to the city's glorious past. It was meant to serve as a mausoleum, but in the 4th century AD Emperor Constantine the Great transformed it into a church. During the Ottoman rule (1453-1913) the Rotonda was turned into a mosque as its minarets attest. Kastro - the old quarter on a hillside above the new urban centre - offers great views across the city and the Thermaikos gulf. The Archaeological Museum houses the findings of Vergina where in 1977 archaeologist Manolis Andronikos unearthed the intact tomb of King Philip of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great. Its contents included exquisite gold jewellery, bronze vases, ivory statuettes and a gold casket containing the king's bones.
